![]() A single gram of 210Po generates 140 watts of power. A few curies (1 curie equals 37 gigabecquerels) of 210Po emit a blue glow which is caused by excitation of surrounding air. A milligram of 210Po emits about as many alpha particles per second as 4.5 grams of 226Ra. 209Po (half-life 103 years) and 208Po (half-life 2.9 years) can be made through the alpha, proton, or deuteron bombardment of lead or bismuth in a cyclotron.Ģ10Po is an alpha emitter that has a half-life of 138.376 days it decays directly to its daughter isotope 206Pb. 210Po (half-life 138.376 days) is the most widely available. They have atomic masses that range from 194u to 218u. Polonium has 25 known isotopes, all of which are radioactive. Other more neutron rich isotopes can be formed by the irradiation of platinum with carbon nuclei. It has been found that the longer-lived isotopes of polonium can be formed by proton bombardment of bismuth using a cyclotron. Only about 100 grams are produced each year, practically all of it in Russia, making polonium exceedingly rare. ![]() Polonium may now be made in milligram amounts in this procedure which uses high neutron fluxes found in nuclear reactors. In 1934 an experiment showed that when natural 209Bi is bombarded with neutrons, 210Bi is created, which then decays to 210Po via β decay. Polonium has been found in tobacco smoke from tobacco leaves grown with phosphate fertilizers, though similar amount occur in everything from cherries to human tissue. The amounts in the Earth's crust are not harmful. It is found in uranium ores at about 100 micrograms per metric ton (1 part in 10 10), which is approximately 0.2% of the abundance of radium. Polonium is a very rare element in nature because of the short half-life of all its isotopes. The Curies first separated out polonium from the pitchblende, and then within a few years, also isolated radium. This spurred the Curies on to find additional radioactive elements. The pitchblende, after removal of the radioactive elements uranium and thorium, was more radioactive than both the uranium and thorium put together. This element was the first one discovered by the Curies while they were investigating the cause of pitchblende radioactivity. Polonium may be the first element named to highlight a political controversy. It was Curie's hope that naming the element after her native land would publicize its lack of independence. Poland at the time was under Russian, Prussian, and Austrian partition, and did not exist as an independent country.

![]() ASL has its own grammar, culture, history, terminology and other unique characteristics. ![]() There is much more to learning American Sign Language than just memorizing signs. A "visual gestural" language carries just as much information as any spoken language. If you furrow your eyebrows, tilt your head, glance in a certain direction, lean your body a certain way, puff your cheek, or any number of other "inflections" -you are adding or changing meaning in ASL. It isn't just waving your hands in the air. That means it is a language that is expressed through the hands and face and is perceived through the eyes. Many college students use this site as an easy way to support what they are learning in their local ASL classes. You can self-study for free (or take it as an actual course for $483. Now people have the opportunity to study from almost anywhere via mobile learning, but I started this approach many years ago - way before it became the new normal. I decided to open the material up to the world for free since there are many parents of Deaf children who NEED to learn how to sign but may live too far from a traditional classroom. I designed this communication-focused curriculum for my own in-person college ASL classes and put it online to make it easy for my students to access. It is my goal to deliver a convenient, enjoyable, learning experience that goes beyond the basics and empowers you via a scientifically engineered approach and modern methodologies that save you time & effort while providing maximum results. It will also allow you to communicate with your baby many months earlier than the typical non-signing parent! Learning to sign even improves your brain! (Acquiring a second language is linked to neurological development and helps keep your mind alert and strong as you age.) Knowing sign language will enable you to meet and interact with a whole new group of people. My day job is being a full-time tenured ASL Instructor at California State University (Sacramento). I'm Deaf/hh, my wife is d/Deaf, I hold a doctorate in Deaf Education / Deaf Studies. I've been teaching American Sign Language for over 20 years and I am passionate about it. Signing is a useful skill that can open up for you a new world of relationships and understanding. I'm glad you are here! You can learn ASL! You've picked a great topic to be studying. Students shouldn't have to pay outrageous amounts of money just to learn sign language. This cartoon (adapted with permission from the artist) sums up my philosophy regarding curriculum. Another very real and important part of the Lifeprint ASL curriculum project is that of being able to use the "magic" of the internet to provide a high quality sign language curriculum to those who need it the most but are often least able to afford it. Thus, going through the lessons sequentially starting with lesson 1 allows you to reach communicative competence in sign language very quickly-and it is based on second language acquisition research (mixed with a couple decades of real world ASL teaching experience). Then I took the concepts that appeared the most frequently and translated those concepts into their equivalent ASL counterparts and included them in the lessons moving from most frequently used to less frequently used. I compiled lists of concepts from concordance research based on a language database (corpus) of hundreds of thousands of language samples. The main series of lessons in the ASL University Curriculum are based on research I did into what are the most common concepts used in everyday communication. If you actually have time to read this email can you answer a question. We need a bigger list of signs, would you recommend me going through the lessons or are you working on a "more signs" page of maybe 100 to 200 of the most commonly used signs?. " and pull up the bookmark of your web page. We constantly go through the "What's the sign for. We have a vocabulary of 124 signs (most of what are on the 100 signs page). I have a perfectly healthy 2 year old that refuses to talk. ![]() Fleet Command was headed by the admiral of the fleet itself. This department was responsible for the most important aspect of the Alliance military-the Fleet. There were seven Supreme Allied Commanders, broken down as follows: Efficiency was most important, as time and funds were always in short supply for the Alliance. Each Supreme Allied Commander and their staff was expected to run their departments smoothly and efficiently. The Supreme Allied Commanders were the chiefs of each branch of the Alliance military. Sector Forces were at times augmented by Alliance starfighter and ground forces.īranches Supreme Allied Commanders In most cases these were small sized local armies that conducted regular day to day business independently, though they technically partially subordinate to the High Command. These were the Alliance affiliated resistance movements that resisted the Empire in their own respective sectors. The Sector Forces were semi-autonomous military units that were responsible for maintaining the Rebellion on local levels. This included the Alliance Fleet and attached starfighter wings, as well as the small but powerful ground forces that composed SpecForces, fleet regiments and small ground units. The Alliance Forces were the part of the Rebellion's military that was directly controlled by the Alliance and High Command. The most important members of the High Command were the various Supreme Allied Commanders, who had direct command and control of each facet of the Alliance military. For this reason, Alliance tactical doctrine dictated that the High Command and the Alliance Fleet were generally not to be in the same place at the same time, since the Alliance could withstand the loss of either the Fleet or the High Command but not both. ![]() The High Command directed all Alliance military forces in a coordinated effort. It was composed of the Chief of State, who was also Commander in Chief, the Minister of War, the Chief of Staff, and the various Supreme Allied Commanders. The High Command was the mind of the Alliance military. That year, the Alliance Military changed into the New Republic Defense Force. In 4 ABY, Ackbar was appointed Supreme Commander of the Alliance Military. ![]() The Alliance military was separated into two distinct branches: Alliance Forces and Sector Forces. The structure of the Alliance military was designed by Bail Organa, who used his experiences on the Old Republic Senate Military Oversight Committee to aid in setting up the Alliance High Command.
